Lib Dems Celebrate Best Ever Euro Result

11.19.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 8th Jun 2009

The Borough's Liberal Democrats have hailed their performance in last Thursday's Euro elections as the best ever. The result puts the Liberal Democrats on track to hold both parliamentary seats and retain control of the Council.

The party saw its vote go up, winning a 3% swing from the Conservatives to claim a close second just 276 votes behind.

At the last Euro election in 2004 the Liberal Democrats came second 3,107 votes behind the Conservatives.

Commenting Paul Burstow MP said,

"The Euro are always a tough election for us. The voters have spoken: Liberal Democrat going up, the Tories going down and Labour out of the race.

"In Sutton elections are always a straight choice between the Liberal Democrats and the Tories. This result makes it clear that the Liberal Democrats are on track to re-elect two MPs and hold the Council."

Tom Brake said:

"This result shows that where the Liberal Democrats have a sound track record and fight hard, we can take on the Conservatives. This result is a great springboard for the General Election and next May's Council Elections."
