Burstow welcomes end of second home expenses for London MPs

6.24.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 30th Apr 2009

Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, has welcomed the abolition of the second home allowance for outer London MPs.

Mr Burstow, who has never claimed expenses for a second home, today voted to end the controversial privilege which has come under scrutiny recently because of various high profile cases.

Speaking after the vote Mr Burstow said:

'As someone who commutes to Westminster every day and does not claim the allowance, I see no justifiable reason for an outer London MP claiming for a second home.

'The public need reassuring that MPs are not exploiting the system and should be able to see that their representatives don't live in some parallel universe of second homes and huge expense claims.

'Reform must be robust and thorough; it's time to put a stop to the minority of abuses which have tainted the majority of MPs.'
