Labour broke promise over services for the elderly - Burstow

Local MP Paul Burstow has condemned the government for reneging on its promise to consult on increasing the Personal Expenses Allowance (PEA) for more than 250,000 care home residents.

The allowance currently stands at £20.45. It is expected to cover the cost of all personal items not covered by the care package, including clothes and toiletries.

Commenting, Paul Burstow MP said:

"This is yet another example of the government promising to consult- a promise that they have failed to keep.

"The personal expenses allowances tell you everything you need to know about this government's policies for older people, it is mean. It is not enough to meet the costs of those personal things that make so much difference to the wellbeing of frail older people.

"We must have an immediate review of the level of personal expenses allowance, taking into account the real and rising cost of living".

Mr Burstow has tabled a Commons motion aimed at forcing a Government rethink on the issue.
