Paul Burstow MP

Representing Belmont, Cheam, Stoneleigh, Sutton and Worcester Park

Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam has expressed his concern that Epsom and St Helier Hospital NHS Trust did not meet at least one of their financial targets for 2006/2007 according to an assessment by the Independent Healthcare Commission.

St Helier also failed to meet the standards set by the assessment in the area of safety and cleanliness and was not making enough progress to enhance safety for patients, staff, and others. There are also two assessments that were not met dealing with how long patients were waiting to be seen. Many people had to wait longer than 26 weeks to begin receiving treatment once diagnosed and longer than 13 weeks to be seen by a specialist.

Mr Burstow has written to the administrators of both hospitals to request a meeting to discuss possible causes and resolutions for the problems. He is questioning why such poor ratings were given to the hospitals for the use of their resources.

Commenting on the news, Paul Burstow MP said:

"I want to know why St Helier did not meet at least one of their financial targets for 2006/2007.

"The longer wait time is a direct effect of the shortage of staff and beds."

"Cuts made by the NHS are clearly having negative effect on how well the employees
