Teenage Binge Drinking Out Of Control

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 14th Dec 2004

Commenting on a new European survey, which found that Britain's teenagers are among the heaviest drinkers and drug-users in Europe, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Paul Burstow MP, said:

"This new report is deeply worrying. It adds to the growing body of evidence that teenage binge drinking in Britain is out of control. The number of children turning up in hospital because of alcohol is shocking.

"Ministers have been all talk and no action on this issue. The Government's alcohol strategy fails to get to grips with the binge culture, which is putting the lives and health of so many teenagers at risk.

"Ministers need to tackle the root causes of this problem, not just treat the consequences."
