Burstow backs new rights for carers12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 11th May 2004 Local MP Paul Burstow has pledged his support for legislation that could bring new rights to hundreds of local carers. Paul Burstow's support comes in the run-up to a crucial hurdle for the Carers (Equal Opportunities) Bill, the Report Stage and Third Reading of the Bill in the House of Commons on 14 May. The Bill would be a major step forward for the 16,000 people in Sutton who look after a sick, frail or disabled relative or partner, including introducing new rights to information, and more opportunities for work, education and life-long learning and leisure. Introduced by Dr Hywel Francis, MP for Aberavon, the Private Member's Bill has been named 'Sam's Bill' in memory of Dr Francis' disabled son whom he and his wife, Mair, cared for until he died at the age of 16. The Bill has been supported by Carers UK, the national carers' organisation heading the campaign for the Bill. Paul Burstow's support comes at a time when Carers UK have announced backing for the Bill from 300 local and national organisations across the UK, representing over 200,000 carers. Paul Burstow said "I am delighted to support this crucial piece of legislation for carers. Carers are entitled to support - they save the country a fortune and without them the NHS and social care would collapse. "A staggering 2.3 million people in the UK become carers every year. Many people who become carers do not know what help is available and frequently their work, training educational needs are overlooked by professionals. I am delighted to support Dr Francis and Carers UK in their work on the Bill."
