Lack of mental health resources lead doctors to over prescribe anti-depressants

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 30th Mar 2004

Responding to a report by independent medical research specialists Dr Foster that reveals that more than three-quarters of GP's over prescribe anti-depressants Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:

"These figures paint a disturbing picture of GPs doling out pills to make up for the under resourced mental health services.

"The fact that so many GPs admit to over prescribing anti-depressants should shock ministers out of their complacency.

"The failure to invest in good social and mental health services if forcing GPs to administer a chemical crutch."
