Statistics On Teenage Drinking Deeply Worrying

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 31st Mar 2004

Commenting on statistics on drug use, smoking and drinking among young people released today, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:

"These figures are deeply worrying - levels of drinking amongst young people in particular have rocketed over the last decade.

"This is a public health time-bomb and is a sign of the future burden on the NHS.

"Ministers must stop dithering and take action to tackle the root causes of ill health, not just treat the symptoms."
