Superbugs: Government's clean hospital programme a sham5.13.55pm GMT Wed 24th Mar 2004 The high rates of MRSA infection among children reported today is a black mark against the Government's record on NHS hygiene, the Liberal Democrats have said. Rates of superbug MRSA infection among children have increased 19-fold between 1990 and 2001. Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said: "This report is a black mark against the Government's record on NHS hygiene. "The Government has been complacent on tackling superbugs. Infection control teams are struggling with inadequate resources and are under-valued by hospital management. We need to get back to the times when hygiene was a key concern on the wards. "Patients should be encouraged to make sure staff wash their hands. Infection control must be a top priority. "The Government's clean hospital programme is a sham."
