Wanless Report: MInisters must now take action

12.40.09pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 25th Feb 2004

Welcoming today's publication of the Wanless Report, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, challenged Ministers to start to deliver on public health.

Paul Burstow MP said:

"We welcome the recommendations made in the report from Derek Wanless today. It is now up to the Government to deliver.

"If Government reports and gimmicks could solve the worsening rates of binge drinking, the obesity epidemic and the shocking rise in sexually transmitted disease we would have nothing to worry about.

"The White paper this summer must not be a simple stalling measure. Ministers must stop playing leapfrog with their reports and deliver a concrete package of proposals as a matter of urgency.

"The Prime Minister must charge the Secretary of State for Health to spearhead a cross-government approach to public health and an end to the confusing and conflicting messages coming from different departments."
