Compulsory health insurance not a quick fix

11.30.59am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 25th Feb 2004

Compulsory health insurance is not a quick fix to the deep seated problems within the NHS, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said today.

His comments are in response to new pressure group, Doctors For Reform, calling for compulsory health insurance in a full page advert in The Times today.

Paul Burstow MP said:

"It would be a mistake to claim that compulsory health insurance would be a quick fix to the deep seated problems within the NHS. It would mean extra admin costs and more red tape. Cash alone would not solve many of the problems that NHS staff and patients battle against every day.

"A removal of the centrally imposed Government targets and an emphasis on prevention rather than cure is needed."
