Mobile treatment centres must increase NHS treatments, not costs

12.18.30pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 9th Feb 2004

Commenting on Government plans for mobile treatment centres providing fast track surgery, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:

"NHS deals with the private sector must offer value for money for the taxpayer.

"Setting up treatment centres that cream off the easy and profitable operations will leave the NHS to pick up the bill for complex high cost operations.

"The test for diagnostic and treatment centres is whether they increase the NHS ability to treat more people. If the centres simply divert operations from existing NHS facilities and increase NHS costs they will have failed."
