BMA report: consultant contract process mired in confusion

2.54.51pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 6th Feb 2004

Commenting on reports from the BMA that every NHS hospital trust in England has failed to meet the deadline for implementing the new contract for consultants, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:

"This contract process is still mired in delays and confusion. This means there is now a real risk that the NHS could face spiralling costs and a loss of doctor's time and goodwill.

"There are mounting concerns about where the funding for the contract has gone, and about the delays in implementing the details of the contract. We have reached a crucial time for the implementation. The Government could end up with the worst of all worlds - higher costs and less consultant time with patients."
