Burstow helps launch London Manifesto for Children12.00.00pm GMT Thu 21st Nov 2002
Local MP Paul Burstow today welcomed in World Children's Day by signing up to the pledges of the King's Fund Imagine London Manifesto for children that was launched as part of the celebrations. The Manifesto was created by over 2,000 young Londoners through the Imagine London programme and called for 18 'priorities for change' for children and young people in the capital across broad themes of transport, environment, crime, healthy living and emotional well-being and includes a call for broad issues such as homelessness and poverty to be tackled effectively. Paul Burstow MP said:- "Children from across London have worked tirelessly for months producing a detailed vision of how they see the future of our capital. Many of the issues that have been raised are both new and exciting and demonstrate the depth of knowledge that young people have of the realities of politics." "I hope that Mayor Ken pays attention to some of the excellent areas that Imagine London have come up with. It is essential that London is made as safe and child friendly as possible." " "Notes to editors" "• 'Action for a Child Friendly London' is a project of the London Children's Strategy Group, a coalition of over 120 organisations in London fully committed to the full implementation of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. In a speech earlier this month Paul Burstow MP outlined the Liberal Democrat commitment to do the same, including the ending of the use of implements to hit children. " "• The manifesto includes calls for " "- a crackdown on vandalism and litter" "- safe, reliable, affordable public transport" "- more co-operation between police and communities" "- better drug education" "- better access to social workers who are overworked and overloaded"
